Between Tolerance and Objectivism

I consider myself a reasonable woman. A woman of logic and understanding. Someone who is fair, honest, unbiased and open to many different forms of thinking. Although I like to think that I am a genius in my own right, if I am wrong I will admit it…Usually. Although my opinions and views about things are often confused, I am not afraid to engage or explain what I believe in. Between all the glam and the humor of my post online, I like to have open dialogue and intellectual discussion.

It’s election season, which means people are going to be wearing their Political Affiliations badges on their sleeve. I won’t be doing this. I don’t like politics. Politics is not about honor, integrity, or your morals verse my values. It’s all about soundbites, gotcha moments, he said/she said and flip-flopping. It’s all about about getting your party to win, regardless of what is actually better for the country overall. When I do talk politics, I usually take my stances from an economic standpoint. That is what my background is in, but I will never back any political party or politician.

With that being said, I don’t like discussing politics with my friends or family. Not even my clients. It’s bad enough thinking your own loved ones is completely ignorant without thinking they’re just some wacky liberal or some deranged conservative. I usually like to discuss politics with people I don’t know. It’s a lot easier to tell them the true and I don’t have to worry about hurting their feelings as much. Although I am always claim and polite when I discuss political/economic matters. It’s also secret that Twitter is predominately liberal. It doesn’t really matter because my beliefs and values transcend ideology. I approach things from an Ayn Rand philosophy of Objectivism.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion. But if you generally say something, why would or should you be unhappy with the negativity or backlash that you receive? I mean, we all disagree from time to time. People online tend to think that there is no one who could possibly disagree with them. Heaven forbid if there’s that one person who dares to disagree. I’ve encountered many like this. Mostly from people I’d actually like to get to know, but these are the two cases which particularly troubled me.

Kara “Kara Face” Leung. For the most part, I enjoy her content and the fact that we both like Video Games. It’s very interesting how I found her, but I’m not here to discuss that. I’ve been following her for a while with the hopes that she’d follow me back. She didn’t. No big deal. I follow people because I like their content, not because I want followers. anyways, one day she made a particular post on twitter.

Done with voting. Republican voting for Obama? You bet, best moderate Republican president we’ve had in a long while.

I thought it was an interesting post so I humored it with my own:

by that standard I guess that makes Bush 43rd a raving socialist…

Whether you agree or not that Bush is a socialist or Obama is a moderate Republican, it’s a fact that there is really no difference between Barack Obama and George W. Bush policy wise. The entire conversation is there on twitter for as long as it’ll be up there for, but all you really need to know is that the conversation sorta ended like this:

@missjonelyn LOL I’m gonna abstain from talking politics to you, this is fruitless really.

— Karaface (カラフェイス) (@karaleung) October 20, 2012

I’m not really sure what she thought was fruitless: Trying to change my mind or talking with me about something trivial. I’ve been on a lot of debate teams and rarely do I actually get people to change their mind on issues. That just doesn’t happen, but at least she dismiss me. In her own way, she just decided to agree to disagree and I still respect her for that. Not like *sigh* this other one I am going to discuss.

If you’re a guy on the internet (and most guys on the internet are usually horny), you probably already know who this is. It’s not common for models, actors, musicians or even stars to display their political views from time to time. Especially around election season. Most entertainers usually display their alignment proudly, as they all lean the same. Wendy Fiore is no exception as she bravely posts her opinion and shows you where she stands on the issues. Although, I would use the term “bravely” pretty loosely in this case. For the most part, she really has no problem posting her opinions on her twitter page. Just don’t ask her to explain any positions, or challenge any opinions or ask any questions she may not have the answers to. Like — of course — I did.

In reference to my last case, Barack Obama and George W. Bush are no different on any particular policy (for except maybe a few). A few days ago, she posted this particular tweet on her page:

It’s like putting that idiot #Bush back in office. If he wins, we will certainly deserve the bigger mess he’ll make #Romney @theflywahine

— Wendy Fiore (@wendyfiore) October 23, 2012

A fair statement to make. But going back to the facts, there is no real difference between the Bush administration and the Obama administration. All Obama is really doing are the same things Bush is doing, except bigger and faster. So wouldn’t going into the Romney administration be the same as going to the Obama administration? I mean, anyone who has actually seen the debates between Romney and Obama can see that there is very little disagreement between the two.

So, as usual, I humored that comment with one of my own (tweet is edited for longer message):

@wendyfiore @theflywahine I don’t really expect you to answer anything which challenges your world view but I asked this question all night:

Has there really been anything Obama has done differently than Bush, on anything?

— Julia Abenes 「朱莉婭小姐」 (@MissJonelyn) October 23, 2012

I didn’t get an answer. Mainly because Wendy didn’t want to answer. Even if she wanted to accept my challenge, it’s not like I was expecting a real answer. I never get a real answer to that question, EVER. So, being the unimportant person that I am, Wendy felt that such an irrelevant question is better left to one of her followers to answer. Or rather, not answer.

@missjonelyn @wendyfiore Anyone and anything should be better then Romney’s anti women campaign.

— Robin Sjöström (@TheFlyWahine) October 24, 2012

After that, the follower and I got into a pointless discussion. It’s really not worth talking about. But it turns out that Wendy did actually responded to me…Sort of:

You know what’s funny, when people try to insult you and than expect you to respond. I don’t have time for that nonsense - move along.

— Wendy Fiore (@wendyfiore) October 23, 2012

I fail to see how I tried to “insult” her. Did I try to ‘insult’ her intelligence by asking a question she couldn’t come up with an answer for? Or did I ‘insult’ her by saying, ‘I don’t expect you to answer anything which challenges your world view?’ In all honesty, I don’t. Ideologues, partisans, and bias people never review anything which refutes their perception of reality. Most people only watch one news network, read papers/blogs which lean their way, listen to people they only trust. That’s not the issue. The issue is that she said I tried to insult her. So I responded in kind (Tweet edited for longer message):

@wendyfiore If this is in any way geared towards me I don’t recall being insulting. I merely asked a question to try to engage in discussion.

But for future reference, I wont be doing that anymore. I wasn’t aware challenging you was being ‘insulting.’

— Julia Abenes 「朱莉婭小姐」 (@MissJonelyn) October 23, 2012

After I posted this, she responded to me moments later:

If she wasnt referring to me, fine. But this was all a bit confusing an fishy as well considering the circumstances: 1. Her tweet followed seconds/minutes right after I challenged her statement. 2. If you look at the tweet history and all of the mentions she’s gotten via search, no one else said anything ‘insulting’ to her. So it begs the question, ‘Who else could she have possibly been referring to?’ 3. You’ll notice that I don’t have the direct link to this tweet. Why is this? It’s because she deleted this tweet just moments after I replied to her:

@wendyfiore Hm, the unanswered proposals, the timing between my last proposal and your tweet. Coincidental, but couldn’t help up link.

However if its not aimed at me, I apologize. I guess there must be someone else being insulting why trying to get your attention.

Also the photo is blurred so I can’t really see what that says… Pity.

— Julia Abenes 「朱莉婭小姐」 (@MissJonelyn) October 23, 2012

If she wasn’t referring to me, then she wasn’t referring to me. I wasn’t going to engage myself in her political discussions as much anymore and that was that. But I found this a bit strange. Shortly after this incident, she protected her tweets (I wish I took a screenshot of it, but had I knew I was going to write a blog about this I would have). After that, I think she just decided to take the subtle route and block me from engaging all together. If I wasn’t the one being insulting, why did she go such lengths to try to ignore me. Why did she feel that it was so girl to block my engagement?

I really didn’t expect her to engage with me or even talk with me, but to do this is kind of cowardly. I wasn’t rude, insulting or condescending. All I really wanted was to talk and have friendly dialogue, but I was merely blocked for just trying to offer a little challenge. That’s the simplest reason I can think of. The only other reasons I can think of is that my views don’t coincide with hers, or that she found me annoying.

I’m not really the type of person who has to correct every ignorant thing someone post online. It’s not my job to be an educator. To be honest, people who go unchallenged truly do bother me. It’s like those talking head shows like Keith Olbermann’s ‘Countdown,’ Real Time with Bill Maher, ‘The Hannity Show’ with Hannity, and pretty much almost every news show on FOX News and MSNBC. People who go on the air and surround themselves with people who only agree with them. Never have any opposing points of view. I mean, if you want to do that it’s fine but I don’t understand how people an pretend to be so open-minded when they are clearly not. A twitter pal of mine @ZoeyTheGreat (or @ZoeyAlamode whenever she’s not talking to herself), find that we can disagree on a few things. Doesn’t stop her from being my friend and I have no urge to delete, unfollow or block his person.

This is a real pity, because in all honesty I really admired this person. She’s a beautiful woman and she’s into the issues (somewhat). I wasn’t going to stop admiring her because she subscribed to a different political affiliation. There are plenty of celebrities that I like to watch and/or listen to. I don’t boycott them simply because they believe the stupid things that they do. What I’m trying to say is that you never really truly know people and I still don’t truly know Kara, Wendy or anyone else I may have mentioned. I just know politics just happens to bring out the best and the worse in everyone. I guess this is a sign for me to try not to meet my heroes. I may just become more disappointed all over again.

Technology...Who Needs It?

External image

Who needs Technology? Unfortunately, we all do. The reason why I say the word ‘unfortunately’ is because people who once were able to function without it are now required to learn in order to function in the ever changing world around them. It’s unfortunate that people have to keep up to date with the newest gadgets and equipment to function in their daily lives. Whether or not this is better of worse for our society is up for interpretation.

It’s good for a production based economy like China who is constantly developing technology for the rest of the world to use. It’s bad for a consumer based economy like the United States who is losing it’s pace when it comes to technology development. As a result of this, Technology has dumbed the West down in many ways. People no longer are required to think, remember and comprehend as well as they would have been required to in the past. You might say that this is ridiculous, and if you are one of these people I have a simple challenge for you: Try and think of the telephone number of 5 of your closest friends/family. Chances are you probably couldn’t come up with a number even if your life depended upon it. After all, why would you need to have that information memorized? Your smartphone has it all memorized for you.

Don’t get me wrong. I am not a Luddite (Word of the date: Someone who hates Technology). I happen to think technology is rather handy. I love the fact that things are getting better and the fact that things are getting better means that things are getting a little easier. I like the fact that Technology is very user friendly for someone like me to use. And just because I am Asian doesn’t mean that I am technologically savvy, because I’m not. The biggest problem I have with Technology is how to fix it when something goes wrong. I just seem to have bad luck when it comes to it.

Which brings me to the problem I seemed to have with my Desktop computer. I have a Laptop and a Desktop. I use my laptop for when I travel. I use my desktop for all my home operational things. Editing photos, videos, gaming, watching movies, whatever the case may be. It’s on pretty much all the time, which is not bad for the type of computer that I have because it is a very powerful PC. I’m not going to try to bore anyone with computer specs.

External image

Every once in a while, I may get a Security Update or whatever update that Windows is feeding my computer. Most of the time my computer installs and configures those updates without a problem. For whatever reason this didn’t happen for the last update I got. I couldn’t figure it out and my PC wouldn’t bypass the configuration. So what I decided to do was to do a system restore to a point before the update. At first it seemed to work but now I couldn’t seem to log onto my computer through my user or any user I have it on. For whatever reason, my computer was only operational on safe mode. Which was good because this gave me a chance to back up everything on my PC. First thing I backed up were the important files, then the thousands upon thousands of personal photos that I have (which would have been disastrous for all of you). Then other things, like movies and dramas I did not want to download again.

I thought it was best to do a factory reset of the entire system (clean repair) since everything I tried just wasn’t working, which ultimately didn’t work at all. The Damage was so bad that I had to re-install my version of Windows on my computer.

This is the part which essential drove me insane. It felt like all I was doing was going through hoops, just to do something as simple as re-installing Windows 7 on my Desktop. I’ll try to go through it in steps without drowning everyone else in pointless details:

  1. I download the version I already had of Windows 7 on my Laptop Computer.
  2. I download the program which will allow the PC to read the installation program from my external HDD, since I didn’t have a flash drive.
  3. Program wouldn’t allow me to tranfer the installation program because it the HDD wasn’t in the right Format (NTFS).
  4. Transferred all the important files on my Second Desktop and Laptop (yes, I have more than one of each).
  5. Decided to burn the installation on a DVD instead of transferring it to an external HDD. The problem is that my Desktop has issues with reading burned DVDs and CDs.
  6. Tried to burn the DVD on my desktop. It’s very old so it doesn’t read disc very well, so being that my Second Laptop is more up-to-date, I used it for the burn.
  7. As expected, the CD plan didn’t work so back to the HDD plan. I had to format it to FAT 32. Unfortunately, the only other option I could format it to was exFAT but I found a program which allowed me to format it to the right format I needed.
  8. I changed the BIOS so that the computer would Boot with the HDD before any other component.

By doing all of these long and tedious steps, I was able to get my computer up and running again. Keep in mind, I didn’t think of a single one of these steps. Thankfully, I have people who are very into computers who were feeding me suggestions and without them I wouldn’t would have spent money needlessly trying to get my computer running. It’s very annoying because of course no one this is my own fault and the problem was very simple. I just wish that the solutions could have been simple as well. I felt like all I was doing was jumping through hoops in order to fix the problem and went it felt like I was getting closer to solving the problem, another obstacle arises.

I often say that it’s important for everyone to think like Economist. People should know how the business cycle works, what the role of prices are why there cannot be a central plan determining prices and resources for the entire economy. I believe people should understand how Technology works. Not to the point of how to operate their devices, but how works inside and out. The Focus shouldn’t be so narrow to the point where people can’t understand what is wrong with their devices. This only makes people vulnerable to scams. Technology is nice, but sometimes it can make things too difficult, not easier.

London 2012 Olympic Games: Finale

External image

It’s been a fun two weeks, but all good things has to come to an end. The 2012 Summer Olympic games is now over with some pretty interesting conclusions. Some predictions came true while others did not, but there are a lot of disappointments.

One of my predictions being that China will come out on top like they did in the 2008 Olympic games did not come true. Instead, they lost to their rival Superpower The United States with a Gold Medal gap of 8 and an overall Medal gap of 16 medals. Which was much higher than the Medal gap during the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing.

No Surprises

Some Gold Medal wins which were not surprising at all were the wins in games like Archery, Men’s/Women’s basketball, Beach Volleyball and Wrestling. In fact, the bulk of most of their Gold Medals were in swimming alone (16 Swimming Gold Medals). China also of course remains dominate in sports like Weightlifting Gymnastics and Table Tennis. All the other sports were just up in the air for everyone else to win.

Upsets

Some upsets were Japan losing to the US in Women’s Football in the Finals. The United States Women’s Football team is probably the best team right now when it comes to Women’s Football, but Japan bested them in the 2010 World Cup. I thought it would be pretty safe to assume they would win the Gold, but I guess I was wrong.

Interesting to see Denmark not win a Gold Medal in sailing but was very happy to see them win the Gold in Cycling. They’re taking home 9 medals this year which is better than most years.

Most of my upsets I see were on the Football side of things. Mostly involving Great Britain. Losing to Canada 0 - 2 in the Women’s competition and losing to Korea in the Men’s side of things. Down to the wire, was decided by a penalty kick shootout. I never expected them to win against Korea but I were hoping the Women’s team would go far against Japan, but the Canadian team is actually better than I thought. Alot of the Teams I wanted to do well did indeed do well. Alot of the accomplishments was wasn’t in the events I was paying attention to.

Well there isn’t really much to talk about. I didn’t really provide as many updates as I though I would. This was mainly due to the time zone difference but next time it will be easier to see all of the action because the Rio is taking the reigns in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

Summer Olympics 2012

It’s that time. The Summer Olympics is here once again! It’s very special because it’s only around once every 4 years. Sort of like an election but vastly more interesting than politics. 4 years of training. 4 years of blood, sweat, and tears. 4 years of building the perfect team. 4 years of breaking records just to qualify for this moment which only a few earn once in a lifetime. Whether you come in 1st or 50th, to be able to march in the stadium during the Opening Ceremony is the single most greatest honor an athlete can ever achieve.

Now alot of people (mostly westerner Americans) feel that the Olympics is boring. It’s boring because it doesn’t host the sports that I enjoy such as Football (American) or Baseball. In that regard, it may be true, but the way I see it is that those sports aren’t nearly as competitive. What exactly is the point of saying that America has the best Football (American) and Baseball athletes in the world if the rest of the world are not playing those sports. The way competition is suppose to work is you test your skill and abilities against anyone who poses a challenge. Not just those in your network or area.

Now enough of my philosophy on competition. Time to get on with the events and the teams I will be rooting for.

The Events

There are many more events in the Summer Olympics than the Winter Olympics. Many of them are interesting but some are not so. My favorites would include as follows (Not necessarily in this order):

  • Artistic Gymnastic
  • Athleticism
  • Boxing
  • Football
  • Judo
  • Swimming
  • Tae kwon do
  • Weightlifting
  • Wrestling

I’ll probably get into more detail about the types of sports and the athletics who play them. These are just my favorite sports in the Summer Olympics to watch. Some other sports I’ll probably be paying more attention to this year than others is Basketball. Sure, the United States pretty much dominates in the sport of Basketball but this year I have a feeling it will be different. Also, Table Tennis always seems like high paced fun so this year I really want to check it out. All other sports usually involved the water and racing. It’s really not my cup of tea.

The Teams

Anyone who knows me knows that I am by no means a nationalist. This generally means that my loyalties don’t reside to one particular country, but rather which country fairs the best. I’ve lived all over the world and have visited many fabulous countries. How can I side with just one? These are the countries I’m going to be rooting for:

  • Hong Kong, China
  • Denmark
  • Sweden
  • Japan
  • Germany
  • Philippines
  • South Korea

There may be bias when when it comes to my favorite teams but they are not influenced by the politics or culture of the giving area.

Technically, Hong Kong and China are two different countries but I lump them together for geologically purposes. China is definitely the favorite for me this year. They’ve earn the highest rank in the 2008 Olympic games with the most Gold Medals on their home turf. You can’t really go wrong with China. Everything about the China seems to be surpassing the West. Economic, Business, Technological and Athletic wise, China seems to be taking over the world.

Denmark is also a native country of mine and fairs surprisingly well when it comes to the Olympic Games. This relativity small country averages 2 Gold Medals every Olympic Games. Usually in the events of Rowing and Sailing, which is not surprising being that the country neighbors the North Sea. It’s too bad boating events doesn’t interest me.

Sweden’s Olympic success is about the same as Denmark’s but a bit more random when it comes to the placings of their events. They don’t necessarily dominate in one particular field like the Danes. Every time the wins are always different which means the country is very diverse when what it excels at which makes each Olympic Games more exciting than the next.

Japan and South Korea are equally matched when it comes to Gymnastics and Fighting events so it should be fun watching these two go at it.

Well I can talk about sports and teams but I’ll be here all night. Today begins the opening ceremony and tomorrow starts the festivities. I will be providing tons of updates in all of the sports which interests me.
