Well, I mentioned that I went to the movies the other day and I had a choice between seeing Safe House, The Woman in Black, and This Means War. I decided to give Chronicle a chance. Going into this film, I thought I was going to be disappointed as I thought I would be watching some sort of knock off of the American TV Drama Heroes or The X-men perhaps. But I’d have to say this was a really good movie and being that this is my first Box Office film of 2012, that is saying alot.
The general plot of the movie is about three high school students (although it’s only told from the point of view from one of the students) who – during a rave party – find a hole in the ground which made be something alien. The movie doesn't necessarily explain what it is and it does it in a very nice way. These kids follow this alien form and it gives them telekinetic abilities. And as the story develops they start to become better at using their abilities. The can fly, they can levitate larger objects, they can create a force field around them and things of that nature. It’s a really good premise.
Without spoiling the film too much, an event happens at the school which turns these three students from zeros into overnight popularity kings. But soon, that popularity turns into ridicule after a couple of scenes which involves jealously and resentment from the other students. This forms a breaking point when these students turn to the dark side and start using their powers for evil instead of good. That is generally the entire plot of the movie in a nutshell. It’s paced differently than Heroes and X-men, and it’s tragic which makes it different because it’s not as predictable as these other shows.
So if you’re thinking about watching something in the weekend, I would recommend this movie. A lot of you probably already seen the movie already, but if you haven’t it will be a surprise.
Chronicle Rating: 8/10
